Budapest
It’s no exaggeration to say that Budapest is one of the most picturesque capital cities in Europe. The majestic River Danube, that winds its way through the historic city centre, beautifully separates the contrasting city parts of Buda built into the western hills and Pest built on the water’s edge. For an evening to remember, take a dinner cruise on the Danube to experience the city lit up at night and take part in the traditional dancing and singing on board.
Where to Sing
Hungary offers a wide range of performance opportunities both in the capital, Budapest, and in regional centres.
Matthias Church – Budapest
The stunning St Matthias Church in the Buda castle district welcomes performances from high-quality groups. With a capacity of thousands in an historic setting, displaying both Islamic and Christian influences, this is a rare and special opportunity for any choir.
Danube Bend Area
Groups can combine excursions to the Danube Bend area, with concerts in the breathtaking Esztergom Basilica near the Slovak border or in the parish church of Szentendre.
Further afield
Outside the capital, visiting choirs receive a very warm welcome and many of the smaller towns outside Budapest host their own summer concert series. Possible concert opportunities include the cathedral in Kecskémet, the home of the world-famous Kodály Institute.
What to Do
Budapest
Guided sightseeing tours which include the Parliament building and the Fishermen’s Bastion are popular day-time activities. Alternatively, take a stroll along the Danube and cross the Chain Bridge for shopping in the city’s markets or a swim in the ancient Turkish Thermal Spring Baths. You may like to visit the old Academy of Music building where Liszt once lived and enjoy one of the free concerts that take place there every Saturday.
Boat Cruise on the Danube
Take in the city’s sights from the Danube whilst enjoying a delightful buffet meal. This cruise is truly sensational during the evening, when the city is beautifully illuminated.
Esztergom
Visit the magnificent 16th century basilica with its ‘treasure house’ containing one of the richest collections in Hungary and its library that houses a unique collection of rare and medieval books.
