Choir Tours to Normandy
From the wonderfully preserved port of Honfleur to the modern and bustling Caen, Normandy is a fantastic destination for your tour. For culture and art, look no further than the world famous Bayeux tapestry or the magnificent Mont St. Michel, one of the most sacred sites in Europe. The D-Day landing sites can also be visited. Concerts can take the form of a morning recital in one of Caen’s beautiful churches, nicely followed by an afternoon liqueur-tasting at Château de Breuil, where you can also enjoy a tour of the Calvados distillery.
Where to Sing
Notre Dame Cathedral, Rouen
Recently renovated, the exterior of this cathedral attracts crowds of admirers, one of which was Claude Monet who was so taken with the ornate façade that he created a series of paintings entitled ‘The Portal of Rouen Cathedral’. Choirs can perform on the main altar or on the steps in front of it.
Eglise St. Germain, Argentan
Visiting choirs to this impressive church always receive a very warm and friendly welcome from an appreciative audience. This is one of our favourite venues in the region and is ideal for groups with a classical or sacred repertoire.
Eglise de Saint Patrice, Bayeux
Bayeux is a lovely town only 30 minutes from Caen and home to the famous Bayeux Tapestry. For those visiting the town, a concert here is the perfect accompaniment. This welcoming and quaint venue has a passionate and loyal congregation and its location just off the main square, close to cafés and shops, makes it ideal for combining sightseeing and performance.
Amphitheatre Perdrisot, Villers-sur-Mer
On July and August evenings this quaint little seaside town really comes alive. Your choir can be part of the regular tourist entertainment programme and sing at this wonderful amphitheatre, situated on the promenade overlooking the sea.
Attracting an Audience
The Normandy area is well visited by tourists who make an appreciative audience for your concerts however we will always send personalised posters about your concert series out to the venues prior to you arrival who will ensure that the local community know about your upcoming performance.
What to Do
In such a history rich region, Normandy offers a range of towns for your choir to explore. The region’s capital city, Rouen, offers a great day out with plenty of museums, squares, parks and churches to explore. Don’t miss the Notre Dame Cathedral, the Astronomical Clock or the modern church of Saint Joan of Arc who was executed here in 1431.
In the enchanting Mont St. Michel, the abbey’s tower rises from its base on the rocky outcrop which protrudes out into the sea. The only approach is over a causeway which provides a spectacular first glimpse of this ‘floating’ town. A day here can be spent visiting the many beautiful craft shops, the abbey and its museums.
During WWII, a temporary, ‘Mulberry Harbour’ was built off the beaches of Arromanches-les-Bains to unload the Allied Forces’ boats and weapons. Today, visitors to the area can see the 360-degree museum which shows original footage of the war and creates the feeling that you are in the heart of the D-Day action.
For a truly beautiful port, head to Honfleur. Painted many times by famous French artists such as Claude Monet and Eugene Boudin, visits here can include the Sainte-Catherine church which has a bell-tower separate from the principal building and is the largest church made out of wood in France.
