Arriving at Catania port in Naples, the coach set off for Mount Etna where the group took a cable car and 4×4 truck visit up to the summit. Day 2:

The real adventure began today as the group headed for Mount Etna where they made their way on foot to the Silverstri Craters formed by Mount Etna’s 1892 eruption. The group then began their ascent of the volcano, first by cable car then up to 2900m in 4×4 trucks. An Alpine Guide was on-hand to give the group a geographical overview of Europe’s most active volcano. The group then descended the volcano and headed for the Museum of Lava which gave them deeper insight into the devastation these natural hazards can cause. After a busy day the group headed back to the hotel where they enjoyed an evening meal before heading to the local ice cream parlour – a must on any Italian Geography Trip!

Day 3:

After spending the morning roaming the local area and then checking out of the hotel at about lunchtime, the group boarded their coach and set off for the Alcantara Gorge. Most of the afternoon was spent learning more about the geographical formations of basalt rock before moving on to the classical hillside town of Taormina. The group enjoyed an authentic Italian pizza evening meal in the town after which they headed to Messina Harbour for their overnight ferry to Sorrento.

Day 4:

This morning the group headed for Pompeii where they were able to explore the excavated city, before moving on to visit Mount Vesuvius, the cause of the devastation they had just witnessed. Alpine Guides were on-hand to answer any of the student’s questions and give a brief overview of the volcano. They moved on to their hotel, checked in and then went to a local restaurant for their evening meal.

Day 5:

After breakfast, the group collected their packed lunches and set off for an unguided visit of the town of Herculaneum, after this they visited Solfatara where they were met by a guide for a tour of the site. The group headed back to the hotel and enjoyed their last evening meal of the trip in a local restaurant.

Day 6:

It was an early start for the group as their flight departed Naples Capodichino Airport bound for home.
