What's new in safety?

Introducing our latest accreditation…

Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge

We are extremely proud to announce the latest addition to our safety portfolio, the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge.

We have recently been awarded the quality badge allowing us to highlight and demonstrate further our commitment to safety and quality learning experiences outside of the classroom.
The DfE has worked in partnership with the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom to develop the LOtC Quality Badge.  The badge provides for the first time a national accreditation combining the essential elements of provision - learning and safety - into one easily recognisable and trusted accreditation.
The Quality Badge is awarded to providers who have pledged to engage in an ongoing process to sustain high-quality learning outside the classroom and who have demonstrated that they meet six quality indicators, see below:

The Six LOtC Quality Indicators

  1. The provider has a process in place to assist users to plan the learning experience effectively;
  2. The provider provides accurate information about its offer;
  3. The provider provides activities, experience or resources which meet learner needs;
  4. The provider reviews the experience & acts upon feedback;
  5. The provider meets the needs of users; and
  6. The provider has safety management processes in place to manage risk effectively.

Ed Balls MP, Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families said:
“Educational visits are amongst the most memorable experiences in a child’s school life.  I want to see schools taking advantage of the opportunities that learning outside the classroom provides to bring subjects to life.
The Quality badges offer teachers a guarantee that not only is a venue providing the sort of educational value that they can build on in class long after the visit, but they also have the appropriate risk management structures in place, tens of thousands of children take part in learning outside the classroom every day.
I am determined that no child should miss out on these vital experiences because of unnecessary red tape or because of a cotton wool culture that discourages all kinds of risk  I want to see teachers using the quality badge as a practical decision making tool”
