Rock Formation at Bad Munster

Day 2 – Tuesday 03rd  February

After a continental breakfast (including pastries!), we left Koblenz for Boppard, a 20 minute drive south along the River Rhine. Here at this beautiful riverside town, we saw one of the many scores of bandstands that dot the banks of the Rhine. In the summer months, audiences are large and appreciative, but even at this time of year Boppard was very much alive. After a quick stop at the tourist information centre we popped into Hotel Reinlust, which is situated just up from the Bandstand, in order to have a nosy around. What we found was a great big dining room with a stage – a great option for a concert venue!

Next stop is the small town of Bacharach. This sleepy town was closed for the winter, not even the bakery was open! After a coffee and cake stop we met with Frank from the Tourist InformationCentre in Bad Munster who showed us the beautiful Spa park. We tasted the Spa water in the hope that the luke warm, salty refreshment would bring vitality and good health, despite the taste! We visited the bandstand and admired the two giant rock formations that lie across the river, standing as the highest north of the Alps, and rising more than 200m from the river bank. We were taken up to the Castle and marvelled at the view from which we could see a huge book tower made of different types of stone collected from all over the world!

After our busy day we headed back to Koblenz to sample the local wine, made from the Riesling grape producing an aromatic, fruity and elegant white wine for us to enjoy!
