Hills Road Sixth Form College – Day 1

Last updated: Jan 30th, 2019

After a late evening arrival and a good night’s sleep in the lovely Hotel Solemar, we were keen to get out and explore Sicily’s wonders. We set off with our driver, Salvatore, and headed for the Alcantara Gorge to learn about gorge and river formations.

Firstly, we took a walk through the botanical and geological gardens to the viewpoints of the river from above learning about different rock formations and the prehistoric animals that roamed the area.

Next, we took the lift down to the riverbed where the group split up to complete workbook exercises and listen to their teachers explanations of geography and geology.

We then headed to Taormina to visit the Greek Theatre (the second largest in Sicily after Siracusa) before heading for a pizza lunch with a demonstration and explanation of the ingredients and method of cooking pizza from pizzaiolo Marco.

The day ended with a pleasant walk through the walled town before returning to the hotel where we relaxed on the beach prior to small evening meal. Buon Appetito!
