Hot seats on Heimaey

Last updated: Jan 30th, 2019

Following our sunshine cruise to Heimaey, the intrepid Fairfield High School students from Peterchurch in the beautiful Golden Valley of Herefordshire, bravely scaled Eldfell volcano. This awesome volcano erupted in 1973 leading to the temporary evacuation of this Westermann Island. This has to be the most awesome picnic spot in Iceland, with views across the aquamarine sea towards Eyjafjallajokull, Katla and Hekla.

Descending  Eldfell we explored the area of the town where the remains of the houses emerge from the edge of the lava field before chilling out in a superb swimming pool, complete with water slides.

Onwards on a puffin hunt- we had seen these elusive birds from the ferry, but were unlucky on the island. However the return journey was rewarded by sightings of whales in perfect sea conditions.  This really is living the dream!
