Seeing a Rayburn Tour in Action; Life as a Tour Courier

Last updated: Jan 30th, 2019

On returning from a recent tour to the bright lights of New York City as a tour courier, we thought there was no better time to ask Rayburn team member, Asha Savage, about her experiences and responsibilities accompanying groups.

How many times have you accompanied groups as a courier?

Since I started working for Rayburn Tours, I’ve been lucky enough to accompany six groups as a tour courier. Most recently, I’ve travelled across the pond to New York, once with a sports tour and most recently with a music ensemble. I’ve also been to Portugal and Orlando and I’ve been on three ski trips as a Rep. As you can imagine, each experience has been quite diverse and unique!

What do you enjoy about being a tour courier?

Whilst there is no denying that the role of a trip courier does bring its challenges, I absolutely relish in it. In my day-to-day role at Rayburn Tours as a Tour Coordinator, I work with groups, often months in advance, to help create their perfect trip. So it’s a great opportunity to be able to get out of the office and witness a tour in action!

Not only have I been able to meet new people and become more experienced, but I’ve also had the opportunity to see some amazing sights alongside the groups I’ve accompanied.

What have been the highlights of your time as a courier?

There have been too many highlights to mention them all, but what has really stuck with me is what fantastic opportunities we are able to offer groups. At Rayburn Tours, we work to create inspirational travel experiences and this is really brought home when you’re walking through bustling Times Square with students in tow who are simply awe-struck by the bright lights, yellow cabs and soaring skyscrapers. Their excitement is tangible. That’s something special that really sticks with you and reminds you of what an honour it is to enable groups to take part in these experiences.

What is the role of a courier?

The role of a courier is diverse, busy, sometimes unexpected… but never dull! It is your responsibility to make sure that the group’s needs and wishes are taken care of, as you are the on-the-ground representative for Rayburn Tours.

From making sure coaches arrive on time, to collecting tickets, arranging venues to dealing with any late requests, it’s down to you. You’re constantly required to think on your feet, but that’s what makes it so rewarding.

How is a courier on hand to help groups?

Essentially, a courier’s role is to take the pressure off the tour organiser, so that they can enjoy the trip too! They are there to ensure the smooth running of a trip, making sure that everyone gets to where they need to be on time, in line with the itinerary, as well as resolving any issues or dealing with changes that crop up.
