Is this England’s year?

Last updated: May 30th, 2019

With bookmakers ranking them favourites to win the tournament on British soil, could this be England’s best chance at securing The Cricket World Cup for the first time in the competition’s history?

Eoin Morgan’s outfit take on South Africa at The Oval today. They hope to make a positive start to the tournament which features a new round robin format, with the top four teams progressing through to the semi-finals.

After finishing runner-up three times, England are determined to take it all the way on home turf. They sit top of the ICC one-day rankings, which isn’t surprising considering they haven’t lost once in the one-day international series since 2017. They certainly have the required firepower to take them to victory.

After being knocked out in the first round four years ago, the amazing recovery and rise to the top has been largely built on their incredible batting line-up. With four batsman in the top 20 ICC rankings, could Joe Root and the boys take England all the way this time around?

Everyone is hoping for England to become this year’s summer hit, replicating the success of the football team at last year’s World Cup. The group recently spoke with Gareth Southgate, who assured them that improvements in results came from shaking off years of underperformance in the past. Morgan saw strong similarities and hopes his team can replicate the blueprint for success.

Could cricket be coming home this summer?
