Iceland, 6 Day/5 Night Geography Tour

Iceland, 6 Day/5 Night Geography Tour

Your bespoke itinerary will include the appropriate balance of educational visits and leisure excursions to fill your chosen duration and meet your aims and objectives.

Your dedicated Tour Co-ordinator will offer advice and recommendations with the sole aim of creating the perfect itinerary for your group. But just to get you inspired, we’ve outlined the itineraries created for some of our clients below.

Day 1

Touching down in Iceland mid-afternoon, you can take advantage of the extended hours of daylight, making a stop at the pungent Krysuvik Mud Puddles where you'll be met by steaming volcanic vents, boiling hot springs and bubbling mud puddles. Once you've had your fill of all things geothermal, you'll journey onwards to your accommodation. Settle in and admire the striking surroundings and impressive views that are quite literally on your doorstep.

Day 2

It's an early start today (but with a buzz of excitement in the air!) as you depart for Thingvellir Rift Valley to explore the landscape of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Here you'll discover some of Iceland's most spectacular geographical features here, as well as the beautiful and rugged landscape this unique country is known for.

In the afternoon, you'll head to Geysir where the main attraction of the erupting Strokkur Geyser never fails to impress (be sure to capture its awesome eruption on camera!), before visiting Iceland’s most famous waterfall, Gullfoss. From here, it's straight on to the coaches and off to the Secret Lagoon. Enjoy a well-deserved dip in the 38°C mineral rich hot spring and let its soothing waters lull you into a state of complete and utter relaxation (teachers, you're welcome).

Day 3

Feeling refreshed from yesterday, this morning you'll take the short journey by ferry boat across to Heimaey Island. Here a spectacular itinerary awaits you, including a Viking boat trip around the island, a guided Eldfell Volcano hike and a trip down the harbour area which was threatened with closure after the 1973 eruption.

You'll walk over the extensive lava flow that engulfed between 300-400 buildings and soak up sweeping views at the summit area, as well as understand and appreciate the 1973 volcanic event. There's even time for a swim in the local pool before catching the return ferry back to your accommodation.

Day 4

Grab your camera, because today kicks off with a climb to the top of Stora-Dimon, where you'll be able to get your bearings and marvel at the stunning views of the surrounding outwash plain. You'll then journey to the all-too impressive Seljalandsfoss, the only waterfall of its kind where it's possible to walk behind its waters.

Following an insightful trip to the Eyjafjallajökull Visitors’ Centre to learn about dramatic impacts of the infamous 2010 eruption, your afternoon will be filled with the incredible sights of Skógafoss, Dyrhólaey, Reynishverfi and the vast Eldhraun lava flow from the 1783 Laki eruption. Afterwards, you'll head to your new accommodation in Kirkjubæjarklaustur for a relaxing evening at leisure, taking the time to refuel and check out your awesome snapshots.

Day 5

Alas, it's your final full day (boo, hiss), meaning all the more reason to pack as much in as possible! In the morning you'll journey to Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon where you'll set sail on a boat ride across the lagoon, cruising past icebergs of all shapes and sizes.

Your afternoon will then be spent at the Skaftafell Visitors' Centre, giving you the opportunity to explore the centre's exhibition centre, venture close to the snout of Skaftafellsjökull – a giant spilling glacier from the enormous Vatnajökull Ice Cap – and enjoy a breathtaking walk to Svartifoss, a stunning waterfall cascading over basalt columns.

Day 6

Say your final farewells to Iceland as you pack up and head out to the airport for your flight back home to the UK.
