Vatnajökull National Park

Vatnajökull National Park

Vatnajökull National Park contains Iceland’s largest and the world’s third largest icecap, after Antarctica and Greenland.

The journey itself is fantastic as you begin by travelling through the Eldhraun lavas of the 1783/84 Laki eruption and then over the impressively sturdy, stilted bridges which carry you across the vast Skeiðarársandur outwash plain.

On arrival at the Vatnajökull National Park HQ, we can arrange for a ranger to discuss the nature of the environment, its evolution and the continuing processes that alter and adjust the area’s geography.

Exploration amongst the glorious nature of this area is essential. Enjoy a gentle walk to the snout of Skaftafellsjökull glacier to appreciate its retreat and vegetation succession, take a stroll to Svartifoss waterfall with its pipe-like backdrop of black basalt columns or maybe walk along the side of Svínafellsjökull glacier and be impressed by its glacial blue ice, massive moraines and moraine dammed lakes.

Just a little further along, an additional inclusion is to take an amphibious boat trip on the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon. Famously used in the Bond movie, ‘Die Another Day’ for the Ice Palace and car chase scenes, you can sail amongst the icebergs and might see some seals’ heads bobbing up in curiosity!
