Kirkjufellsfoss & Kirkjufell

Kirkjufellsfoss & Kirkjufell

Attracting geographers, photographers and nature lovers alike, one glimpse at the waters of Kirkjufellsfoss and the unique shape of Kirkjufell will leave you transfixed.

As the icon of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, Kirkjufellsfoss is a stunning tiered waterfall where its waters cascade in two broad steps. Whilst looming in the background is the majestic Kirkjufell Mountain – said to be the most photographed mountain in Iceland.

Rising out of the sea behind the waterfall, the colours of Kirkjufell change every season, from summer greens to winter whites, meaning you’ll always find a new perspective to view this beautiful landmark. Also translated as ‘Church Mountain’, its shape is remindful of a nave or church tower.
