We’re proud to sponsor the Historical Association’s Great Debate 2026

Last updated: Oct 24th, 2025

The Great Debate is an exciting national competition that invites young people from across the UK to speak about important historical topics. It helps them build confidence, think critically, and better understand the past. Our sponsorship shows our continued support for education, history, and helping the next generation grow into thoughtful, informed historians.

What is the Great Debate?

Each year, participants are challenged to respond to a thought-provoking question set by the Historical Association. Students present a short, persuasive speech that not only answers the question but argues their point of view convincingly. It’s a unique opportunity to build valuable skills in critical thinking, public speaking, and structured argumentation—all while exploring key moments and themes from history. Whether they’re aspiring historians or simply enjoy a good debate, students leave the experience more confident, articulate, and informed.

Over the years I am always inspired by the confidence exuded by the young people who take part in the Great Debate. Our partnership with Rayburn Tours provides the opportunity for the competition to reach more schools, allowing us to offer more support for lower income students and enabling all students to take part.

This year’s question…

How important are personal and public records as evidence for explaining the story, or stories, of your local area?

Where does the competition take place?

The competition begins with regional heats held across the UK—the first stage of the Great Debate. Students who succeed at this stage advance to a virtual semi-final, where they compete for a place in the prestigious national final. As part of their sponsorship, Rayburn Tours will be providing prizes for the winners, adding an additional layer of anticipation and reward to the competition.

We’re excited to be working with Rayburn Tours to support the Great Debate enabling us to do more to support school students across the UK. The Great Debate is truly one of the highlights of my year and I look forward to hearing so many inspiring young people at the final.
