Case Study: St Edmund’s College Food Technology Tour to Naples, Italy

Last updated: Oct 13th, 2026

In July 2026, St Edmund’s College stepped beyond the classroom and travelled to Naples, Italy, to explore the rich food culture and traditions of one of the world’s most famous culinary destinations.

As the birthplace of pizza, Naples was the perfect setting for a school food technology tour, giving students the opportunity to experience Italian cuisine at its source. Led by party leader Wilmari Kleynhams and Robyn Cumming, the trip offered an in-depth look at food production, local ingredients and the traditions that have shaped Italian cuisine.

From getting hands-on with pizza making to discovering the production of authentic Italian olive oil, the students enjoyed a fantastic mix of practical learning, cultural experiences and plenty of memorable moments.

What Did Their Itinerary Look Like?

From hands-on food experiences to exploring the rich history and culture of the region, the students enjoyed a varied itinerary that combined learning with plenty of opportunities to experience the best of southern Italy.

Day 1: From Farm to Pizza

Day 1 began with an early start as the school made their way to Naples. Following a short flight, the students headed to Fondo Galatea Working Farm, where they were given a guided tour of the farm and an insight into local food production.

The highlight of the day was a hands-on pizza-making session, giving students the chance to put their culinary skills into practice and experience one of Italy’s most famous food traditions for themselves.

After a busy first day, it was time to head to their accommodation for some well-deserved rest.

Day 2: Stepping Back in Time

While food technology was at the heart of the trip, there was also plenty of opportunity for students to discover the history and culture of the region.

On Day 2, the group travelled to Pompeii for a guided tour of the world-famous archaeological site. Walking through the ancient city provided students with a fascinating glimpse into life thousands of years ago.

The golden moment on our trip was when we stood in the ruins of Pompeii and could feel the history that saturated the space. The kids were speechless at the beauty, grandeur, and immense sense of reality that visiting such a space brings.

The group then continued their cultural experience with a visit to the Lapis Museum, before heading back to relax after another full day of exploring.

Day 3: Discovering the World of Olive Oil

Day 3 brought the students back to the world of food production with a visit to Olive Oil Mill Gargiulo.

Here, they had the opportunity to learn more about olive oil production, from the process behind this much-loved ingredient to its importance within Italian food culture. It was a great opportunity for students to connect what they learn in the classroom with real-world food production.

After an educational morning, the group headed to Valle Dell’Orso Water Park for some well-earned fun and relaxation.

Day 4: Time to Head Home

After four busy days filled with food, culture, history and plenty of new experiences, it was time for the school to make their way home.

It was a trip packed with hands-on learning and memorable experiences – giving students the chance to explore food technology beyond the classroom while immersing themselves in the culture and traditions of Italy.

Why Would You Recommend Naples for a School Food Technology Tour?

I would recommend the Naples trip to other school groups, as the balance of activities was just perfect for our group.  From pizza-making at the most picturesque working farm, to the heat of Pompeii and the dramatic coastal views from our accommodation, the trip was a huge success.  The olive oil visit, eating sorbet in lemons and indulging in tasting a variety of pizza and pasta dishes were all highlights for our students – to cap off each day, they happily spent the last hour or two of pool time enjoying the slides and various swimming pools guarded by a lifeguard as the Napoli heat was intense!

Why Travel with Rayburn Tours?

Party Leaders Wilmari Kleynhams and Robyn Cumming worked closely with Tour Consultant Reece Woolley and Tour Coordinator Jen Ellis to create a tailor-made itinerary that reflected the school’s budget, interests and requirements.

Their support throughout the planning process helped ensure everything was organised smoothly, from the initial arrangements through to the final details of the trip.

The team worked efficiently, and as planning progressed, we were passed from one operator to the next.  The app was wonderful also, as it centralised all the information in one place.
