Enrichment trips

What is the Government’s Core Enrichment Entitlement?

The UK Government’s new Enrichment Framework marks a broader vision for education – one that recognises young people need more than academic success alone. Alongside building strong foundations in the classroom, the framework highlights the importance of giving every student access to enriching experiences that develop confidence, resilience, curiosity and a sense of belonging.

As part of its Plan for Change, the UK Government says these reforms will help young people “step boldly into the future, with the knowledge to achieve and the skills to thrive as the world around us continues to rapidly evolve.”

At the heart of the framework are five pillars of enrichment, providing schools with a shared vision for creating meaningful opportunities that support both academic achievement and personal development.

The Five Pillars of Enrichment

The Government’s Enrichment Framework is centred around five key pillars, designed to help schools provide a broad range of experiences that support both academic achievement and personal development.

Civic Engagement

Encouraging students to understand their communities, develop a sense of responsibility and become active,
informed citizens.

Arts & Culture

Providing opportunities for students to engage with creativity, heritage and cultural experiences that broaden their understanding of the world.

Nature & Adventure

Helping young people build confidence, resilience and environmental awareness through experiences beyond the classroom.

Sport & Physical Activity

Promoting physical wellbeing, teamwork and participation through active experiences and healthy lifestyles.

Life Skills

Equipping students with the practical, social and personal skills they need to thrive in education,
employment and everyday life.

Why school trips offer the most powerful enrichment opportunities

School trips are one of the most effective ways to bring enrichment to life.

Whether students are exploring WW2 history in Germany, practising their language skills in France, performing on a close-to-home UK concert tour or investigating volcanic landscapes in Iceland, educational travel combines curriculum learning with experiences that simply can’t be replicated in the classroom.

Every tour becomes cross-curricular by nature. A geography trip also introduces students to local culture and history. A language visit strengthens communication skills while fostering confidence and independence. A music tour nurtures collaboration, cultural understanding and musical performance. A sports tour enhances athletic ability, leadership and sportsmanship. A ski trip encourages self-reliance, perseverance and an appreciation of the mountain environment. An adventure trip inspires problem-solving, adaptability and a willingness to embrace new challenges.

Enrichment has always been at the heart of what we do

At Rayburn Tours, we’ve been creating educational travel experiences for schools for over 60 years.

Long before enrichment became a national priority, our tours were helping students discover new places, immerse themselves in different cultures and build confidence through shared experiences.

From day trips across the UK to educational tours throughout Europe and beyond, every itinerary is designed with learning at its core. We work closely with schools to create experiences that support curriculum objectives whilst delivering the wider personal development that today’s enrichment framework encourages.

Inclusivity at its core

The government states that enrichment participation is associated with “higher educational achievement” and positive outcomes in adulthood. At Rayburn Tours, our trips aim to achieve exactly that.

We believe that every student should have the opportunity to benefit from experiences beyond the classroom, regardless of their interests, background or academic pathway. Rather than limiting trips to specific subjects or small groups, teachers regularly open opportunities to multiple year groups and offer a variety of trips at different price points, making enrichment accessible to as many students as possible.

Whether its visiting museums, skiing down the slopes, soaring down a zipwire, or scoring goals abroad, our trips are intended to give every student the opportunity to explore outside of the classroom. Without enrichment trips, students are unable to gain those vital skills that equip them for life.
