Winter in the Rhineland

Last updated: Jan 30th, 2019

Sara, Katie and Joanna from the Concert Tours department have just returned from an inspection trip to The Rhineland. Whilst out there they were asked to come up with 5 reasons why The Rhineland is worth visiting, especially over the winter period. Here’s what they said…

Cologne

With over 2,000 years of history and a range of extraordinary architecture, it’s no wonder Cologne is first on the list. From art and chocolate museums to medieval churches, there is plenty to see and do in the city.

The Mount Everest of cathedrals, the Kölner Dom is the spiritual heart of Cologne. Climb the 533 steps up to the south tower or take a guided tour to learn about the history of this magnificent building. The World Heritage Site took 600 years to be completed and is the perfect place for a memorable choir performance.

Bonn

This relaxed city and former capital boasts remarkable buildings with stunning natural landscape surroundings. Home to the birthplace of Beethoven, Bonn is devoted to the promotion of the musical arts. As well at the Municipal theatre, there are also several private theatres for drama, opera and musicals.

River Rhine

The longest river in Europe flows through six countries and separates Germany from France. A canal cruise down the ‘Old Father Rhine’ is the perfect way to see the beautiful riverside towns, castles and vineyards. Or, discover the Rhine from a whole new angle. Take a cable car ride across the river and experience breath-taking views of the surrounding area and towns.

Festive Atmosphere

With an array of Christmas markets and festivities dotted around The Rhineland, there is no escaping the festive atmosphere. Many villages welcome choral groups to perform to the crowds, with a number of local churches welcoming advent concerts. It really is the perfect Christmas concert tour destination!

Christmas Markets

If you’re looking for a more relaxed and light-hearted experience, then the Christmas markets are a must. Dotted all around the cities, the festive atmosphere is felt throughout The Rhineland. Stroll, shop and explore everything they have to offer, and even treat yourself to a mulled wine!
