FST Catherine Close Retires – Here’s More On Her Fantastic Journey

Last updated: Jan 28th, 2026

For Catherine, geography has always been about more than textbooks; it has been about experience, discovery, and inspiring young people to see the world differently. As she retires from her role as a Field Study Tutor after 10 years, her story reflects a lifelong passion for geography and a commitment to giving students opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom.

We spoke to Catherine about her unforgettable time as an FST, the destinations she returned to time and time again, and the moments that made each trip so rewarding. Discover more below!

From Classroom to the Outdoors

Catherine’s journey began whilst she was working as a geography teacher. She joined a tour (with fellow FST, Cath Rule) as an extra adult, so she could experience the trip from a student’s perspective. It was an opportunity to see first-hand how powerful learning could be outside the classroom, and it quickly left a lasting impression.

Her enthusiasm and subject knowledge soon stood out! During that first trip, Catherine was asked to teach one student group whilst Cath taught another, and before long she was invited to continue working as a Field Study Tutor. That invitation marked the beginning of a role she would continue in for the next ten years.

A Career Rooted in Geography

Catherine began teaching geography in her twenties and went on to work in education for almost 40 years. She spent 22 years at her final school, where she found real satisfaction in both her teaching and school life.

Throughout her career, geography was central to everything she did. It was a subject she cared deeply about and one she was passionate about bringing to life for her students.

Over 50 Trips and a Wealth of Experience

Across her time as a Field Study Tutor, Catherine took part in more than 50 trips – her travels included destinations such as the Azores, Sicily, and the Netherlands, alongside a wide range of other locations available for fieldwork.

However, Iceland became the core destination for geography trips and the place Catherine returned to most often – a destination that continued to inspire her, no matter how many times she visited!

Cath emphasises the beauty of Iceland, explaining:

“You can’t encapsulate the excitement of seeing something like a geyser explode or seeing a glacier for the first time. A photograph doesn’t do it – even a film doesn’t, because you don’t experience the awe.”

It was this sense of awe that made Iceland such a powerful learning environment for students!

More Than Just Geography

Whilst geography was at the heart of every trip, Catherine recognised that the benefits of fieldwork went much further. Working with students, she saw how much the experience meant to them on a personal level.

“For students, it’s not just about the geography, it’s not just about the landscape, but it’s just about them enjoying life and being together, because they’ve gone with their friends.”

These trips offered students independence, shared experiences, and time with friends – all of which played an important role in their personal development.

Why Work With Rayburn Tours?

Catherine didn’t set out to apply for a role as a Field Study Tutor – she was invited to become involved. Over time, her relationship with Rayburn Tours continued to develop, supported by a strong sense of care for staff and a welcoming, supportive environment.

Even as the organisation grew, Catherine felt that the people-focused, family feel remained, making it a place where she felt valued and comfortable throughout her time working with Rayburn.

As Catherine retires from her role as a Field Study Tutor, she leaves behind a lasting contribution to geography education and field studies. Through her knowledge, enthusiasm, and dedication, she helped create meaningful experiences for students and teachers alike – experiences that will stay with them long after the trips themselves.
