Why Coach Travel Adds to the Adventure of a School Ski Trip

Last updated: Feb 19th, 2026

Written by Joey: Ski Specialist/Tour Consultant at Rayburn Tours and a former teacher and Head of Year who ran ski trips for years.

When most people think about school ski trips, their minds jump straight to snowy mountains, hot chocolate and those first wobbly moments on skis. But for me? One of the best parts has always been the coach journey.

I know- long hours on a coach doesn’t sound glamorous, but having been on more than a few of these trips myself, I’ve become a firm believer that coach travel isn’t just a practical option, it’s part of the magic. Below, I have split it into some of the reasons as a former teacher, I chose coach travel and why I would happily choose it again!

Easy safeguarding = peace of mind

One of the biggest advantages is how simple safeguarding becomes. Everyone is together, in one place, where staff can easily keep track of students. Even the stops are straightforwardly planned, supervised, and predictable. No navigating busy terminals, no splitting groups… just a very calm, very controlled environment that makes life easier for staff and students alike.

The onboard vibe is everything

With the right combination of drivers and staff, the coach becomes a rolling community.
My school had a tradition that never failed: a shared Spotify playlist run by the teachers. Students and staff could add songs to create the ultimate road trip mix (within reason, of course). This always led to a fun, friendly, “we’re all in this together” atmosphere that set the tone for the whole week. In fact, I still listen to this playlist now as it turns out my students had such a great array of musical tastes!

Then there’s coach karaoke, which somehow always happens. Sometimes intentionally. Sometimes… less intentionally. Usually, by me to be fair…

Either way, it’s unforgettable.

More comfortable than it seems

Unlike flying, travelling by coach means students can bring their own pillows, blankets, and whatever else helps them get cosy. It’s amazing how quickly a coach transforms into a mobile nest, with hoodies everywhere.

Plus, when you’re stopping for snacks and meals in France, Italy, or Switzerland,  ordering food turns into an impromptu language practice session, so you cover some cross-curricular learning at the same time. It’s fun, real-world learning, no worksheets required.

Another perk that often gets overlooked is that most of the journey happens overnight. Students settle in with their blankets and pillows, the lights dim, and before anyone realises it, hours have passed. It makes the journey feel much faster than it actually is, and everyone wakes up already well on their way to their destination.

Movies, music, and charging ports

Modern coaches are built for long journeys. Charging ports mean students can stream, scroll, or game without the dreaded low battery panic. Films on the coach are another huge win. There’s nothing like watching a movie together to settle everyone down after the initial excitement.

No transport hassle once you arrive

One of the underrated bonuses is that once you reach resort, you don’t have to worry about local transport. Your coach is with you from start to finish. No deciphering shuttle schedules, no waiting around in freezing temperatures, just hop on and go. Après sorted!

Drivers who know the route like the back of their hand

School ski trip coach drivers? Absolute heroes. Many of them run these routes so regularly that the whole operation becomes seamless. They know the roads, the stops, the timings- everything’s that’s involved in getting from A to B. That level of experience makes such a difference, especially when travelling with a large group.

Cost effective – especially for big groups

Keeping school trips affordable is essential especially during times like this. Coach travel is significantly cheaper than flying, especially when you’re taking a sizeable group. That saving often means more students can come along opening the trip to those who might otherwise miss out. At the end of the day, the trip is for the students so every little helps!

More luggage? No problem

School ski trips come with a lot of gear, and airlines carry lots of restrictions when it comes to luggage allowances.
Coaches, have their huge underfloor luggage compartments. Students can bring extra layers, spare gloves and home comforts without anyone stressing over baggage limits.

In the end… the journey becomes part of the story

From my own personal experience coach travel to ski resorts isn’t just a cheaper or more convenient option, it genuinely adds to the experience. It creates community, memories, inside jokes, shared playlists, and a sense of adventure that starts long before anyone steps onto the slopes.

For many students, the journey becomes one of the most memorable parts of the trip. My students would always reminisce with funny anecdotes from our coach journeys.

And honestly? That’s exactly how it should be.
