Last updated: Jun 30th, 2026

Did you know that just like the FIFA World Cup, there’s a winter sports version for skiing and snowboarding? As the FIFA World Cup heats up, showcasing the best talent, performances and sportsmanship, the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, organised by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS), brings together elite skiers to compete on some of the most challenging and iconic slopes in Europe.

From the top-tier slopes of Grandvalira to the renowned racecourses of Madonna di Campiglio and Sestriere, school ski trips to these resorts promise exceptional skiing surrounded by a rich winter sporting heritage. Not only do they provide the setting for intense competition, but they also welcome school groups looking to learn and develop. With fantastic skiing conditions, extensive piste networks, and modern facilities, each resort is a great contender for a school ski trip, whether catering to beginners or more advanced skiers seeking a challenge. Students will have a truly unforgettable experience, skiing at some of the most prestigious resorts.

Grandvalira, Andorra

Grandvalira is a premier destination for a school ski trip due to its wide, open slopes,  perfect for beginners learning a new skill. There is a variety of slopes for skiers and snowboarders of all abilities, allowing them to develop their skills and progress with confidence. As the largest ski area in the Pyrenees, Grandvalira offers school groups over 210km of linked pistes, reliable snow conditions and world-class facilities, making access across the ski area seamless. The high-quality resort extends far beyond school ski trips and family holidays, with Grandvalira playing a huge role in the alpine skiing circuits.

In 2012, Grandvalira (Soldeu) hosted its first-ever FIS Alpine Ski World Cup races, beginning the resort’s journey to becoming a key international ski racing venue. This event established Andorra as a credible World Cup destination and led to the country hosting another Women’s Alpine World Cup race on the Avet Slope in Soldeu in 2016, as well as the Alpine Ski European Cup Finals in 2018.

2019 was a big year for Grandvalira as the resort held the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup finals for the first time, welcoming the world’s top 25 skiers in each discipline. As a result of the successful finals event, the FIS awarded Grandvalira the hosting rights for the 2023 Alpine World Cup finals, beating Switzerland and Norway. Grandvalira hosted the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup for the second time, with more than 6,000 spectators joining each day. The FIS praised the organisation of the event, solidifying the resort’s status as one of the most prestigious venues in the world of Alpine skiing.

Madonna di Campiglio, Italy

Known as the ‘Pearl of the Dolomites’, Madonna di Campiglio is an elite and picturesque resort in northern Italy. Sitting at 1,550 metres and featuring 150km of interconnected pistes, one of the best snowboarding parks in Europe and a strong World Cup heritage, it’s a destination that promises a taste of luxury and exceptional intermediate skiing and snowboarding.

In 1967, Madonna di Campiglio was one of the first resorts to host a World Cup race in the competition’s first season, and since then, it has hosted a total of 47 Alpine Skiing World Cup races. Historically known as the 3Tre, meaning ‘Three Races’, Italy’s oldest Alpine Skiing World Cup race takes place on the world-renowned, iconic Canalone Miramonti slope. The 3Tre refers to three disciplines of alpine skiing: downhill, slalom and giant slalom and were part of the famous 3Tre competition series, which helped cement Madonna Di Campiglio as a regular fixture in the international circuit and World Cup calendar.

Madonna di Campiglio is another great school ski trip destination that offers over 150km of varied, tree-lined slopes, perfect for mixed ability groups. The resort sits at an altitude of 1,550 metres, which provides reliable snow conditions and extensive snow-making capabilities, meaning you can ski late into the season. The interlinked terrain gives students the space to learn and improve their skills on gentle slopes, while more advanced skiers can tackle the World Cup terrain, including the legendary 3Tre racecourse.

Sestriere, Italy

Just like Madonna di Campiglio, Sestriere is another high-level skiing resort and an iconic feature in the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup since its inception in 1967. The resort has hosted more than 70 individual races that span across numerous events for both men and women (30 men’s and 40 women’s). Sestriere’s vast racing history also includes hosting the 1997 World Ski Championship, the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in Turin in 2006, and the Women’s European Cup in January 2026. The resort has become a landmark in delivering top-tier winter sports events, establishing its reputation as one of the most prestigious and longstanding venues in national and international skiing.

Sestriere is consistently ranked as a top resort among teachers, and for good reason. This resort is renowned for its excellent snow-sure conditions right through to the late season, as well as having slopes suitable for all abilities. As one of Europe’s first purpose-built resorts, founded by Fiat’s Giovanni Agnelli, you can expect ease and efficiency, fantastic infrastructure and an unforgettable school ski trip.
