School ski trips provide students and teachers alike with an unforgettable break from the classroom. Picture pristine slopes, fun après activities and a whole host of memories. But to make this school ski trip a reality, you first need to plan how to get there. We’ve put together the advantages and key considerations to help you decide whether travelling by coach or flying is the right option for your group.
Coach Travel
Advantages of a Coach School Ski Trip
There are many advantages to a coach ski trip. They are typically more cost-effective for large groups, meaning school ski trips can be open to more students. The lower the cost, the more inclusive and accessible school ski trips can be.
With coach travel, your trip begins right from the school’s doorstep and continues straight into the resort, avoiding airport check-ins, security queues, and additional transfers. In many cases, the overall travel time is similar to flying, but far more convenient. Another key benefit of coach travel is easier safeguarding. Students stay together throughout the journey, even during timed rest stops, making it much easier for staff to ensure all students are accounted for at all times.
Coach travel is also more environmentally friendly than flying, helping to reduce the overall environmental impact of international school trips. In addition, you’ll have your coach with you throughout the trip. Experienced drivers know the routes, rest stops and timings, resulting in a more streamlined and reliable way of travelling. Having your own coach in resort is a huge bonus too, providing flexible transport for evening activities and keeping costs lower overall.
Students also have greater flexibility with luggage and ski equipment, allowing more space for warm and waterproof clothing. You can view our packing list . As most school groups have the coach to themselves, the journey is also a great opportunity for group quizzes, movies and sing-alongs, helping to build a sense of community before hitting the slopes.
Considerations
One of the biggest considerations for a school ski trip is the length of travel. Coach journeys are often longer, and trip durations usually need to include full days of travel. However, coach travel is often considered part of the school ski trip experience. With regular rest stops and onboard entertainment, the journey itself can be enjoyable.
Students can bring pillows, blankets and their own devices to stay comfortable and occupied, particularly during overnight travel. Coach travel is best suited to large groups who want to prioritise simple logistics, safeguarding and affordability.

Flight Travel
Advantages of flight school ski trips
Flights are typically a faster way to travel, meaning you’ll have more time on the slopes. However, it’s important to factor in travel to the airport, as well as transfer times from the airport to the ski resort.
Due to shorter overall travel times, students may arrive feeling more comfortable and with higher energy levels. Flights can be better suited to older groups, as students are generally more confident navigating airports, security procedures and managing their own belongings.
Jess Seddon Tour Consultant says: “Flight tours remain a great choice for schools that need to cover long distances within the UK before reaching Dover, or for resorts that sit further afield, where flying can save significant time compared with longer coach journeys.”
Considerations
When planning a school ski trip, the travel method is factored into the overall quote. Depending on the time of year, flight prices can fluctuate and are often more expensive than coach travel.
Another consideration when flying is the limitation on luggage and ski equipment, meaning only essential items can be packed. In addition, groups may be split up at the airport, from check-in and security to meal breaks, which can make safeguarding and monitoring students’ whereabouts more challenging.
Flight trips also require additional transport from the airport to the resort and for travel within the destination. This is often done by a coach to keep the group together. While public transport or resort shuttle buses may be available, these do not always align with a school group’s itinerary or timings.
Which is right for your group?
Both flying and coach travel offer their own benefits and considerations, and each provides unique experiences. From travelling together with friends, singing songs and playing games on a coach, to the excitement of flying and navigating an airport for the first time, the key is choosing the option that best supports your staff, students and school priorities.
