Marrekech and the High Atlas mountains

Last updated: Jan 30th, 2019

Day two set off promptly after spending the night in a very comfortable and accommodating hotel. The pupils were up, bags packed and rooms spotless!

We set off from Marrakech towards the High Atlas mountains. Along the way we looked at the precarious shortage of water on the Marrakech plain. Pupils have seen how the weather on either side of the mountains differs due to the rainshadow effect.

After the plain we started our climb along the Tizin Tichka Pass which winds up the mountain side. The Pass allowed for spectacular views back towards Marrakech and up the valley to see snow-topped mountains!! We stopped for lunch in a small village. The pupils enjoyed either chicken or lamb bruchette, which is a type of skewer and a flat-bread. The pupils had time to start practising their haggling skills!!

After crossing the mountains we descended into the desert and visited an ancient Kasbah fort which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here the pupils got to see amazing views including erosional features.

We arrived in Ouarzazate at around half 5. Most pupils dumped bags and changed for a swim. The pool was, to say the least, absolutely freezing!!
