From Pitch to Theme Park: Cheslyn Hay High School’s School Football Tour to Orlando

After several Easter football tours to sunny Spain, the PE department at Cheslyn Hay High School decided it was time to mix things up. They wanted something new that would deliver exciting competitive fixtures and unforgettable cultural experiences. This time, they were aiming for the end of the school year.

In search of a destination that would wow their students and fit into the academic calendar, their journey led them to Rayburn Tours.

When it came time to plan their next big adventure, Orlando quickly rose to the top of the list. The destination offered the perfect mix: competitive football fixtures and the chance to enjoy iconic American experiences. Soon, 36 excited Year 8 and Year 10 students were all set for a 2024 sports tour like no other.

“I made lots of calls gaining insight into the tour. Each member of staff I spoke with was excellent. We also had two zoom calls which again were convenient and gave a friendly face and touch to the planning process in the final build up. I asked quite a few questions, and these were either answered immediately or promptly if they needed to get back to me.”

Choosing the US: Sports Meets Cultural Capital

With over 30 students from Years 8 and 10 in tow, the trip soon became so much more than just an Orlando football tour. The two fixtures against international teams were a fantastic opportunity to test their skills, while the moments in between really made the trip unforgettable. From the adrenaline-pumping rides at Universal Studios and Busch Gardens to the electric atmosphere of a live Major League Baseball game between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Cleveland Guardians, students got a true taste of American culture.

“A truly once in a lifetime experience for our students and the trip surpassed all expectations.”

Reflections & Impact

The response from both students and parents was overwhelmingly positive. Many described the tour as a once-in-a-lifetime experience, one that created unforgettable memories and left a lasting impression.

“We had emails from parents once we arrived back, saying, “What an opportunity of a lifetime,” and that their sons and daughters will cherish the memories they’ve made forever.”

Looking Ahead and Advice for Other Schools

For schools considering a similar trip, the key piece of advice is to look beyond just the sporting element. While training and fixtures are important, it is also important to look at the wider experience – the cultural exposure, the independence, and the personal development.

As the school looks ahead to their next tour to Orlando in 2026, with strong interest already from younger year groups, these tours are not just highlights of the school calendar – they are milestones in the students’ lives.
