What is a ski school?
A ski school is an establishment or a learning programme typically based in a resort, that provides ski and snowboarding lessons led by qualified instructors. Structured lessons cover basic movements, such as stopping and starting, for beginners, progressing to more advanced techniques for more experienced skiers. The instructors also go over equipment handling, as well as how to stay safe on the slopes.
How do ski schools operate?
When learning to ski, students will be placed into groups of around 8-10 based on their skiing and snowboarding abilities. Students will get 4-5 hours of skiing and learning each day. Lessons will typically last two hours at a time, with a lunch break in between, giving students the well-earned rest.
As beginners, students will learn the basics, such as walking with skis on, snowploughing and parallel skiing. Before the lesson, groups will usually meet at the base of the main gondolas, where instructors will provide guidance on where to go.
How will students benefit from a ski school?
Ski schools provide students with a motivating environment in which to learn and develop their skills, while ensuring correct form and technique. Professional instructors teach the importance of mountain safety, the proper use of lifts and equipment, and how to reduce the risk of accidents and injuries.
School ski trips are often a place for students to develop important personal skills. Ski schools encourage confidence and resilience as students navigate new environments, such as the slopes and ski lifts, and overcome the challenges of learning a new skill. It’s also time for students to make new friends and share fun experiences together, creating memories to last a lifetime.
