Panathenaic Stadium

Panathenaic Stadium

The magnificent Panathenaic Stadium is one of the world’s oldest, as well as being the only major stadium in the world to be built entirely of white marble!

In Roman times, during the reign of Emperor Hadrian, substantial works were carried out to convert the stadium into a horseshoe shape and to install spectacular seats made of white Pentelic Marble, known as edolia. With the birth of the Olympic Games, the Panathenaic Stadium was chosen to host the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.

More recently, in 2004 the stadium was used to host both the archery and the finish of the marathon race, one of the Modern Olympics’ most traditional events. On a visit here, you can access the Olympic Museum, famed for its beautiful memorabilia and tribute to the Modern Olympic Games, as well as enjoying an informative audio tour.
