Say ‘Olá’ to the Azores!

When I told people I was heading to the Azores their response seemed to follow the same patter: initial excited interest, followed by a short pause and then the quizzical enquiry…

“So where are the Azores?”

An autonomous region of Portugal, this archipelago of 9 volcanic islands sits in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, some 930 miles west of Lisbon. They form part of the geographical region of Macaronesia, which also includes Madeira, the Canary Islands and Cape Verde.

Even more exciting is their location at the junction of 3 tectonic plates; the Eurasian, North American and African plates. The islands are testament to the immense forces responsible for shaping our planet and there are signs of volcanic activity everywhere.

It seems that most people know little about these intriguing islands and they remain one of Europe’s best kept secrets. An unspoiled island paradise undiscovered by modern tourism.
