It’s time to start looking at resorts for your next school ski trip! If you’re looking for a beginner-friendly ski resort across Europe, you’ve come to the right place. These resorts are often quieter, more relaxed, and offer great skiing conditions, not to mention good value for money.
Here are the best ski resorts for beginners that Rayburn Tours has to offer!
Santa Caterina – Italy
A hidden gem of Italian ski trips, Santa Caterina combines a charming and tranquil atmosphere with a stunning mountain setting and wide slopes, making it ideal for first-time skiers. Santa Caterina has 26% beginner runs and 66% intermediate runs, making it a great resort for progression and for students to learn at their own pace without the pressure of more experienced skiers or crowded slopes.
The 35km ski resort is compact, walkable, and has all the amenities you need, from ski lifts to restaurants and après activities, leaving you and your group more time to improve on the slopes! Due to its size, managing a school ski trip becomes that much easier, as students won’t be spread too far apart, keeping them secure while they make memories with their classmates.
Jess, our ski specialist coordinator, says:

Santa Caterina is well-suited for all ability levels and offers a safe and welcoming environment, which is ideal for school groups and young skiers. Sitting at an altitude of 1,738m, with skiing reaching up to 2,880m, the resort boasts excellent snow reliability throughout the season. The friendly atmosphere, panoramic views of the Stelvio National Park, and a range of après-ski activities, including ice skating, sledding, and authentic pizza nights, makes Santa Caterina a top contender for any school ski trip.

Pinzolo – Italy
Nestled in the Italian Dolomites, Pinzolo is a supportive, friendly, and compact resort that provides the perfect environment for learning and progression. It’s linked to the larger area of Madonna di Campiglo, but maintains the cosy village atmosphere that puts the students at ease on the slopes.
With 41% beginner runs and 38% intermediate runs, the resort welcomes beginner skiers, with dedicated zones at high altitudes. Students can experience and enjoy the beautiful Italian Alps while experiencing a genuine Italian cultural experience.
Le Grand Massif – France
With almost 50% runs suited to beginners, Le Grand Massif is one of the best destinations for first-time skiers! Le Grand Massif has 165km of dedicated learning spaces, with nursery slopes and its own ‘Jardin Des Neiges’, and features 139 runs in total, including 25 green (beginner) and 59 blue (easy) slopes.
The gentle terrain is designed for students to transition gradually from green runs to blue, while soaking up the scenic routes of the French mountains. Le Grand Massif also offers amazing, interlinked skiing across the resorts of Morillon, Les Carroz, Flaine, and Samoens, where students can ski on long, spectacular slopes perfect for practicing snowploughing and turning.

Valmeiner – France
Combining safety, affordability, and beginner-friendly slopes, Valmeiner is a great choice for a school ski trip. There’s a variety of wide and gentle green and blue runs, and plenty of well-developed nursery slopes across the resort, particularly around the 1800 villages. As students ski down the gentle, winding slopes, they can enjoy the magnificent views of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, all in a welcoming and open environment.
Jess says: Valmeinier is a compact and welcoming resort that’s perfect for school ski trips. As part of the Galibier-Thabor ski area, it offers access to over 160km of pistes, with 70% of slopes above 2000m, ensuring excellent snow conditions throughout the season.
Valmeinier is especially well-suited for beginners and intermediates. The resort’s layout makes it easy for groups to navigate, and many accommodations are located close to the lifts and ski school meeting points ideal for smooth mornings and safe supervision.
Andorra
Known for its beauty and strong suitability for those learning to ski, Andorra is the perfect destination for any school ski trip. Andorra is home to Vallnord and Grandvalira, two fantastic ski resorts for beginners.
Vallnord has 53% beginner runs and 37% intermediate runs, and offers 63km of pistes, making it a small, safe, and family-friendly environment, perfect for learning and developing skills on the slopes.
Grandvalira has 54% beginner runs and 30% intermediate runs that span across 210km of the resort. Students can enjoy a range of après ski activities, from ice skating, bowling, thermal spas, and more, keeping them entertained throughout their trip!
A note from Jess
We know that for first-time skiers, even the walk to the slopes can feel like a big challenge, especially when you’re carrying skis, poles, and wearing boots for the first time. That’s why we carefully select resorts where ski storage is close to the slopes wherever possible, making those first steps on snow a little easier and a lot less stressful.
Many of the beginner-friendly resorts we work with are known for their quieter pistes and shorter lift lines, which makes a huge difference when it comes to building confidence and making real progress. These beginner resorts offer the perfect environment for learning, without the hustle and bustle of the larger, more well-known resorts.
By starting in a smaller, more relaxed setting, groups often have a much more positive experience, and when they’re ready to take on a bigger resort in the future, it feels exciting rather than overwhelming. It’s all about setting the stage for success and helping every skier find their feet.

Ski Specialist Coordinator
Hi, I’m Jessica, and I’ve been part of the Rayburn Tours team for over three years now, working in the Ski and Sports Tour Consultant role, and I absolutely love it! Before joining Rayburn, I spent two amazing ski seasons in Whistler and one in Les Arcs, and I’ve had plenty of holidays to Tignes and Val d’Isère too. Safe to say, skiing has become a huge part of my life. I didn’t learn to ski until I was 21. During my first season, it was a big challenge, but I fell in love with it straight away and haven’t looked back since.
Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to tour rep in some brilliant resorts like Sestriere, Santa Caterina, Sauze d’Oulx, Morzine and even Mont Sainte-Anne over on Canada’s East Coast. I really enjoy getting out to our resorts, meeting the hoteliers, and exploring the areas we send our groups to; it’s one of the best parts of the job!
I also love chatting with group leaders about their tour plans, whether you’ve organised lots of trips before or you’re brand new to ski tours, I’m always happy to help and share ideas. We’re here to help every step of the way!
