Allerton High School’s Geography Adventure to Tenerife

Last updated: Apr 20th, 2026

Recently, geography students from Allerton High School travelled to Tenerife for an unforgettable field study experience. From volcanic landscapes and lava caves to marine wildlife and banana plantations, the trip offered students the opportunity to see geographical concepts come to life beyond the classroom.

Read on to discover more about their fantastic adventure!

A Destination Full of Surprises

For many students, Tenerife was far more geographically diverse than expected. The trip challenged some common assumptions about the island and revealed its incredible natural variety.

Within just a few days, students experienced volcanic terrain, coastal environments, caves formed by lava flows and agricultural landscapes, offering a powerful real-world perspective on topics studied in class.

We felt that Tenerife is marketed completely wrong in the UK – people think it is a beach holiday destination, but the array of geographical features was amazing. The number of different landscapes that students saw in a short space of time was great and no distance is very far once you’re there.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

The group’s itinerary combined fieldwork opportunities with immersive experiences across the island.

Students explored the San Blas Environmental Reserve and the dramatic natural pools of El Caletón, before travelling into the spectacular landscapes of Teide National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, they learned about volcanic processes, native plant species and the formation of Tenerife’s unique geology.

Another stop included a visit to a local banana plantation, where students discovered how Tenerife’s climate supports agriculture and learned about the economic and cultural importance of banana production on the island.

Reaching New Heights at Mount Teide

One of the most memorable moments of the trip came during the visit to Mount Teide, Spain’s highest peak. Students travelled by cable car high into the volcanic landscape, taking in panoramic views across the island. Seeing the volcanic terrain up close helped students connect classroom learning with real-world geography, from lava formations to caldera landscapes.

For some students, this was an entirely new experience!

Students were amazed by the cable car going up to the top of Mount Teide – for some students this was the first thing they’d ever done like this.

Dolphins, Flying Fish and Ocean Views

Whilst every day brought new discoveries, one excursion stood out as the clear favourite.

The group visited the Cueva del Viento lava caves, exploring underground volcanic tunnels before heading to the coast for a boat trip along the spectacular Los Gigantes cliffs. Also, the opportunity to observe wildlife in its natural environment made the experience particularly memorable for students.

The students’ biggest highlight overall was seeing 200 dolphins during the boat ride. One student said it was the best thing he’d ever seen! The flying fish were another highlight.

Why choose Rayburn Tours?

Organising an international school trip can be complex, but the team at Rayburn Tours helped ensure everything ran smoothly from start to finish. The digital itinerary system (Vamoos) also made it easier for staff to stay organised throughout the trip – for Allerton High School, the Vamoos app made it all ‘extremely easy’. All members of staff could see the plan, tickets, and information digitally, so that they didn’t need to carry pages and pages of information whilst out on tour!

Furthermore, for Ellenor, the support was especially valuable as it was her first time leading a trip abroad.

Rayburn were great from start to finish. Communication was quick and easy and every question was answered in detail so I felt informed at all stages. This was my first experience of leading an international trip and I felt supported throughout!
