“This Is Exactly Why We Did This”
For many students, Madrid was a city full of exciting opportunities. Within just a few days, they visited the ancient Egyptian landmark Temple of Debod in the heart of the city, immersed themselves in the spirit of Spanish football during a tour of Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, and explored the world-renowned collections of the Museo del Prado. Each experience offered a different window into the city’s rich history and culture, helping students connect their classroom learning with the world around them.
For the teaching staff, there were several moments that captured the true value of the trip. As trip leader and teacher José Martinez explained, the real highlight was seeing students grow in confidence with the language:
“Seeing some of our pupils interact with people in Spanish and engage in good conversations, often overcoming their reticence to speak, was a definite highlight.”
Throughout the visit, pupils embraced every opportunity to practise their Spanish. Teachers observed students initiating conversations with locals in cafés, shops and museums, asking questions confidently and sustaining discussions – often overcoming their natural hesitation to speak. For many, it was the first time they had used Spanish so spontaneously outside the classroom.
