Robben Island Museum

Robben Island Museum

Immerse yourself in the long-standing, multi-layered history of Robben Island, a unique symbol of ‘the triumph of the human spirit over adversity, suffering and injustice’.

The island is known as the holding place for the imprisoned Nelson Mandela, who served 18 of his 27 years in prison here. Today, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and museum which offers insightful, daily tours. Board your ferry and depart from the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront, returning to land at Murray’s Bay Harbour to take a short walk to the bus that will transport you to all of the island’s historical sites.

Sites include the Lime Quarry, Robert Sobukwe’s house and the graveyard of those who died from leprosy, as well others, culminating with a viewing of Nelson Mandela’s cell. Even more, tours are guided by former political prisoners of the island, making the experience all the more poignant.
