Roald Dahl Day 2018

Last updated: Jan 30th, 2019

Roald Dahl’s stories have inspired children and adults around the world for decades. Today is Roald Dahl Day and to celebrate one of our favourite authors (who also attended a school local to Rayburn HQ), we’ve pooled together some of the marketing team and asked them for their favourite Roald Dahl books.

Dan’s Pick:
Danny the Champion of the World
“Danny lives in a gipsy caravan with his father, the most marvellous and exciting father any boy ever had.

All the land around them belongs to Mr Victor Hazell, a rich snob with a great glistening beery face and tiny piggy eyes. Nobody likes him, not one-little bit.

So one day, Danny and his father concoct a daring plot that will give the old blue-faced baboon Victor Hazell the greatest shock of his life – so long as they don’t get caught…”

Jade’s Pick:
The Twits
Mr Twit is a foul and smelly man with bits of cornflake and sardine in his beard. Mrs Twit is a horrible old hag with a glass eye. Together they make the nastiest couple you could ever hope not to meet.

Down in their garden, the Twits keep Muggle-Wump the monkey and his family locked in a cage. But not for much longer, because the monkeys are planning to trick the terrible Twits, once and for all.”

Sophie’s Pick:
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
“Mr Willy Wonka is the most extraordinary chocolate maker in the world.

And do you know who Charlie is? Charlie Bucket is the hero. The other children in this book are nasty little beasts, called: Augustus Gloop – a great big greedy nincompoop; Veruca Salt – a spoiled brat; Violet Beauregarde – a repulsive little gum-chewer; Mike Teavee – a boy who only watches television.

Clutching their Golden Tickets, they arrive at Wonka’s chocolate factory. But what mysterious secrets will they discover?

Our tour is about to begin. Please don’t wander off. Mr Wonka wouldn’t like to lose any of you at this stage of the proceedings…”

Caroline’s Pick:
Matilda
“Matilda is the world’s most famous bookworm, no thanks to her ghastly parents. Her father thinks she’s a little scab. Her mother spends all afternoon playing bingo. And her headmistress, Miss Trunchbull? She’s the worst of all. She’s a big bully, who thinks all her pupils are rotten and locks them in the dreaded Chokey.

Despite these beastly grownups trying to push her down, Matilda is an extraordinary girl with a magical mind. And she’s had enough. So all the terrible adults had better watch out, because she’s going to teach them a lesson they’ll never forget!

Sean’s Pick:
George’s Marvellous Medicine
“George Kranky’s Grandma is a miserable grouch. George really hates that horrid old witchy woman. One Saturday morning, George is in charge of giving Grandma her medicine.

So-ho! Ah-ha! Ho-hum! George knows exactly what to do.

A magic medicine* it will be. One that will either cure her completely . . . or blow off the top of her head.

*WARNING: Do not try to make George’s Marvellous Medicine yourselves at home. It could be dangerous!”
