Last updated: Jul 2nd, 2019

Berlin offers a wealth of landmarks and attractions that give valuable insights into different eras throughout German history. The modern infrastructure of the city combined with its complex historical areas allows for a vibrant visit. This is particularly applicable to school trips as crucial insights can be gained into times that shaped the 21st century.

A city once divided is now a fascinating visit for school trips that allows you and your group to learn about Germany’s rise to importance, along with the horrors and turbulent times that occurred throughout the 20th century.

We’ve picked out our 3 favourite stopping points that we think are essential to your school trip. They will aid in your learning of how Berlin left its distant past to become the modern city of Freedom.

Brandenburg Gate

The significance of this iconic landmark lies within the story of Germany’s creation and its darkest days throughout Adolf Hitler’s rise to power in the 20th century. Re-opened during the re-merge of East and West Berlin, it later became the symbol of post-war Germany.

Its relevance and importance within the city’s recent history cannot be overlooked.

The Reichstag Building

Once deemed useless on the military fringe between East and West Berlin, the Reichstag building was brought back into importance as it became the new home of the federal government. With a rich history and prominent role during Berlin’s bleak past, it has now become a modern centre of tourism within the city.

During your walking guided tour, we recommend making your way up to The Reichstag Dome. Acting as a symbol for the ‘new’ city of Berlin, this tourist hotspot provides great views over the city and is certainly something you should tick off your list.

Topography of Terror

Acting as one of the most-visited remembrance destinations within the city, the Topographie des Terrors is located on a site where the instruments and development of the Nazis’ terror plans were developed during the Second World War.

Covering important aspects such as National Socialism and the immeasurable consequences of the Nazi Rule, this remembrance site offers strong insight into what shaped Berlin, Germany and the modern world we live in today.

Allowing the group to explore on their own could be the best route to take with this visit. The various exhibitions should allow them to gain a true feel for how the SS central command operated during the war.

Described by Visit Berlin as a place where terror is tangible, this memorial centre is like no other.
