Why Does Tenerife Stand Out As A Geography Destination?

Last updated: Apr 29th, 2026

If you’re looking for a geography trip that balances academic value, affordability, and an all-round enjoyable experience, Tenerife is the ideal option for your students.

With its blend of physical landscapes, cultural insight and reliable year-round conditions, the island offers a learning experience that feels both structured and exciting, making it particularly well-suited to school groups.

Discover more about Tenerife below…

A Natural Classroom, All Year Round

The island’s mild climate means geography trips can take place throughout the year with minimal disruption, allowing students to make the most of their time in the field.

What makes the destination especially valuable from an educational perspective is the range of environments students can explore within a relatively small area. Over the course of a single trip, they can move between:

  • Volcanic and arid landscapes shaped by past eruptions
  • Lush forest ecosystems in the north
  • Coastal features, including cliffs and natural pools
  • Agricultural areas such as banana plantations

This variety allows teachers to cover multiple topics in one cohesive experience, helping students make meaningful connections across the curriculum.

Accessible, Inclusive and Easy to Plan

Tenerife is not only rich in geographical interest! It’s also incredibly practical for schools to organise.

Direct flights operate from across the UK, including regional airports such as East Midlands and Northern Ireland, where international options can often be limited. Airlines like Jet2 offer frequent services, including daily departures from Newcastle, giving schools greater flexibility when choosing travel dates.

Key benefits include:

  • Strong flight availability from a wide range of UK airports
  • Competitive pricing, making it a cost-effective option for schools
  • Straightforward travel logistics, reducing planning complexity

This accessibility plays a big role in making Tenerife a reliable and realistic choice for geography departments.

Fieldwork that Feels Real

Tenerife offers a wide range of excursions that bring classroom learning to life. A visit to Mount Teide – Spain’s highest peak at 3,718 metres – provides a powerful introduction to volcanic processes and landscape formation. The surrounding national park creates an unforgettable setting where students can observe geology on a truly dramatic scale.

Throughout the trip, students can:

  • Explore volcanic terrain and understand tectonic activity
  • Visit banana plantations to learn about climate, agriculture and local economies
  • Take part in fieldwork at the San Blas Environmental Reserve
  • Investigate coastal processes at locations like El Caletón

There’s also time to relax and recharge. A visit to Siam Park adds a fun, memorable element to the itinerary, helping maintain engagement across the trip.

The Hidden Gem: Anaga Rural Park

A highlight for many groups – and our Tour Consultant Jane McLardy’s favourite excursion – is Anaga Rural Park, often described as one of the island’s most unique locations.

In contrast to Tenerife’s drier southern landscapes, Anaga is defined by its cooler, mist-covered environment and ancient laurel forests. This creates a completely different ecosystem, giving students the chance to explore biodiversity, microclimates and environmental change in a very tangible way.

Highlights include:

  • A distinct microclimate shaped by elevation and trade winds
  • Rare plant species and ancient woodland
  • Opportunities for cross-curricular learning, particularly with biology

Case Study: Learning Beyond the Classroom

A great example of Tenerife in action comes from Allerton High School, whose geography trip combined fieldwork with immersive experiences across the island.

Students explored the San Blas Environmental Reserve and the natural pools of El Caletón before travelling into Teide National Park. Here, they developed their understanding of volcanic processes, native ecosystems and the formation of the island’s landscapes.

The itinerary also included a visit to a local banana plantation, where students learned how Tenerife’s climate supports agriculture and explored the economic importance of banana production.
