Stokesley School’s Geography Expedition to Sorrento

Last updated: Oct 21st, 2026

Recently, Stokesley School embarked on the geography trip of a lifetime – they explored the sun-drenched region of Sorrento and experienced renowned geographical features first-hand.

From discovering the impact of Pompeii’s 79 AD eruption to viewing the serene, mountainous landscapes of Positano, this trip blended unforgettable geography with a culturally rich experience.

Hear more about their adventure from Party Leader Chris Jones below!

What was the group’s itinerary like?

Firstly, let’s take a look at a few of the excursions that the school did!

  • Sailed around azure-blue waters with Laser Capri
  • Experienced an ice-cream making demonstration and tasting session at Gelateria Bourgainvillea
  • Trekked through the ancient Roman debris of the Pompeii Archaeological Park
  • Explored the volcanic landscape of the Vesuvius National Park
  • Visited Fondo Galatea, a beautiful organic farm
  • Perused the charming village of Ravello
  • Investigated the impact of earthquakes and eruptions at Herculaneum Archaeological Park
  • Viewed paleo-Christian burial sites in the Catacombs of Saint Gaudiosus

Was there a moment during the trip where you thought, “this is exactly why we did this”?

Whilst the incredible excursions provided plenty of opportunities for geographical discovery, sometimes it’s the quieter moments that make a school trip truly special. After days spent exploring new places, learning about the world and sharing exciting experiences, the group had the chance to slow down and reflect on their adventure together.

For Chris, it was their final evening in Sorrento that captured the real value of the trip. With the sun setting over the coastline, students gathered on the beach to enjoy some downtime, play together and reminisce about everything they had experienced. It was a simple but memorable way to bring the trip to a close, highlighting how school travel can create meaningful connections beyond the classroom.

We went to the beach down from the hotel on the last night and students sat and watched the sunset, some paddled and played ball and we talked about the great time we had had doing all the activities and experiences on the trip.

Why would you recommend Sorrento to other schools?

For geography groups looking for a destination that combines curriculum links with cultural experiences, Sorrento has plenty to offer. Its compact surrounding region is home to an impressive variety of geographical features, making it possible to explore everything from volcanic landscapes and coastal environments to historic settlements and archaeological sites within one trip.

Students can investigate the lasting effects of volcanic eruptions at Pompeii and Herculaneum, discover the landscape of Mount Vesuvius and observe the relationship between people and their environment across the region. Alongside these valuable learning opportunities, the colourful coastal towns, local cuisine and welcoming atmosphere help make the destination just as rewarding outside the classroom.

With so much variety close at hand, Sorrento offers an excellent opportunity to make geography engaging, memorable and tangible for students. It’s easy to see why Chris would recommend it to other school groups looking to combine meaningful learning with an exciting travel experience.

What did the team at Rayburn Tours do to make the trip smoother and less stressful than expected?

Organising a school trip involves plenty of planning, and having a knowledgeable, supportive team on hand can make all the difference. Every group has its own priorities, and the flexibility to adapt plans when needed helps ensure the experience works for both students and teachers.

Throughout Stokesley School’s adventure, our team was on hand to answer questions, respond promptly and make adjustments to the itinerary to accommodate the group’s needs. This flexibility helped take some of the pressure off the organising team, allowing them to focus on what mattered most: giving their students an unforgettable educational experience.

Reflecting on the support they received, Chris highlighted the importance of having a team that was responsive, approachable and willing to find solutions when needed.
