Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Constructed by a 5th century monarch, the Sigiriya Rock Fortress is an incredible feat of construction.

As a World Heritage Site, the fortress is Asia’s best preserved city from the first millennium and even has graffiti dating back from around the 7th century!

Also known as ‘The Lion Rock’, the site is dominated by a vast column of rock that is nearly 200 metres high. A series of moats, water gardens and remnants of the ancient city are spread across two sides of the rock, with the remains of a giant lion’s paw guarding the staircase which once led to the summit and royal palace.
