Busting the History is ‘Old News’ Myth

Last updated: Oct 1st, 2024

History is often mislabelled as a duller subject, or ‘old news’. But history’s relevancy has never been greater, and goes far beyond just names, dates, facts and figures…

It’s time to change the way we approach this fascinating subject!

How? Well, it’s quite the skill to bring the past back to life for students, so we’ve compiled a list of top tips to spark curiosity and drive learning…

Let’s get to it!

A Different POV

Instead of focusing on the past, why not relate what you’re teaching to the modern day?

The saying ‘history repeats itself’ exists for a reason – patterns in history can tell us so much about why things are the way they are today! Draw similarities and differences between past and current events, explore family trees, and have students consider the impact of big and seemingly small decisions in shaping our present and future…

Variety – The Spice of Life

Shake up the way in which you have students retaining information! Interactive timelines, videos, discussion-based activities, battlefield reenactments, props and all add to the experience!

If students are having fun while learning, they are far more likely to remember what they are being taught, and they’ll also feel encouraged to delve deeper into the subject.

We have FREE resources to get you started. Check out all we have to offer, including our Historical Landmarks ‘Top It!’ Cards!

Storytime

Instead of focusing on facts and figures, consider the personal and people involved in history – these are someone’s ancestors after all! Biographies and storytelling techniques put feeling to historical stats and accounts. And learning about something relatable and human is far more captivating.

Step into the Story… Quite Literally

Museums, iconic landmarks, trenches, memorials – you name it! History trips have it all, and really allow students to step into the story! Hands-on experience shows students how history is made, preserved and interpreted, and encourages them to discover, critically analyse and form their own questions and opinions.

Trips also accommodate cross-curricular learning – as students immerse themselves in the culture of a country, they are exposed to new languages, customs, art, geography and more! No trip is one dimensional – there’s something to suit everyone!

Shake Things Up!

Variety is key when it comes to teaching a rich and complex subject like history. The material may be heavy, but the way in which its taught and brought to life doesn’t have to be!
