‘WOW’ Geography Moments That Change How Students See the World

Last updated: Jul 10th, 2026

Geography trips introduce students to some of the world’s most breath-taking landscapes, from the golden dunes of the Moroccan desert to the dramatic glaciers of Iceland. These unforgettable destinations bring geography to life in a way no classroom can, giving students the chance to experience the subject firsthand.

We spoke to teachers who have taken their pupils on geography trips abroad and asked them to share the moments that made them stop and think, “Wow.” Here’s what they had to say…

When geography becomes real

Many teachers agreed that the biggest ‘wow’ moments happen when students experience the sheer scale of landscapes they’ve only studied in the classroom.

Paul Greenhalgh, teacher at the Royal Grammar School, recalls taking students onto Sólheimajökull glacier:

One thing they struggle with is appreciating the scale of glaciation. To stand on the glacier, have a chat about how much ice is beneath their feet, and to have the impact of climate change beneath them – it completely changes their understanding.

Alan Parkinson, Head of Geography at King’s Ely Prep, has witnessed similar reactions over many years of leading Iceland trips. For many students, seeing these landscapes in person transforms abstract geographical concepts into something tangible.

The glacier is always dramatic, particularly if you do the glacier walk. Noticing the height of where the ice used to be, and how the path has to be re-assessed every day because it changes every day.

The moments nobody expects

Not every memorable experience comes from a textbook example. Often, it’s the simple things that leave the biggest impression.

Just going to the supermarket can be exciting. You don’t know what people are going to find interesting.

For Jill White, teacher at St Leonards School, every Iceland trip brings something different. She still remembers students’ reactions to Iceland’s natural wonders:

There’s always something that blows everybody away. Turning to see Goðafoss for the first time was so ‘wow’… Seeing the Northern Lights twice was so impressive.

Helen Sail, teacher at Exeter School, says some moments are unforgettable because of the atmosphere they create.

Going to the hot springs feels like the entrance to the underworld – the steam drifts across the path as students walk along.

Standing where geography happens

For Matt Bird, teacher at North Bromsgrove High School & Sixth Form, no classroom explanation can compete with standing in the landscape itself. From the volcanic islands of Sicily to the dramatic scenery of the Bay of Naples, he carefully designs each itinerary to inspire curiosity at every turn.

I deliberately plan the trips so every moment is a ‘wow’ moment. Explaining theories to students is not the same as seeing the theory in action.

Matt Bird, North Bromsgrove High School & Sixth Form

Helen Sail has witnessed similar reactions during her many years leading trips to Sicily. One particular journey never fails to capture students’ imagination.

She believes these first impressions often spark the questions that lead to the best learning, as students begin to observe the landscape for themselves and ask why it looks the way it does.

Getting the ferry across to Vulcano and seeing the crater has a huge wow factor.

Memories that stay for life

Whilst the spectacular scenery is unforgettable, every teacher agreed that the greatest impact goes beyond geography. These trips build confidence, spark curiosity and create memories that stay with students long after they’ve unpacked their suitcases.
