Super Jeep Adventure

Super Jeep Adventure

A terrific option for groups is to take a Super Jeep Journey into the interior valleys, highlands, icecaps, glaciers and volcanoes of South Iceland.

Travelling in magnificent 4×4s with drivers, the bulk of whom are members of Iceland’s Rescue Teams, this is one for the adventure-loving, thrill-seekers of the group! We can offer three Super Jeep adventures (routes taken depend on conditions and time of year):

Fimmvörðuháls Super Jeep Adventure

This is the site of the first eruption in Iceland in March/April 2010. The route passes between the two ice caps of Mýrdalsjökull, beneath which sits Katla volcano and Eyjafjallajökull. There are two new volcanic cones, Magní and Moði, and an extensive new lava flow, Goðahraun, to be seen. To reach the actual eruptive site of Fimmvörðuháls, there is a moderate walk of about 1-1½ hours.

Eyjafjallajökull Super Jeep Adventure

This option takes you to the summit area of the volcano of Eyjafjallajökull and close to the crater area of the 2010 eruption. The views out and around can be completely astounding. The route goes into the mountains, fording streams and crossing snowfields, before then travelling on to the ice cap itself. As well as the gigantic crater being viewed, the head of Gigjökull glacier can also be seen from above.

Gigjökull and Þórsmörk Super Jeep Adventure

The route goes by the Gigjökull glacier, much changed since the April 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption. Before, the glacier had a beautiful pro-glacial lake, often with icebergs lazily floating on it. Today, a vast dust bowl replaces it. After Gigjökull, it’s onwards past Steinholtsjökull glacier and into Þórsmörk, a glorious area where valleys can be explored in super jeeps and narrow ravines explored on foot. The spilling glaciers from both Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull abound. For many Icelanders, the area of Þórsmörk would be declared their favourite place in the entire country.
