Soil Conservation Centre

Enjoy a visit and illustrated talk about soil conservation in Iceland, which can then be followed by some hands-on fieldwork.

It's often thought that only tropical desert locations experience land degradation and desertification, but in Iceland, a sub-Arctic area, the same processes are extensively at work.

Deforestation and overgrazing have been serious human factors in the loss of Iceland’s soil cover. What the untrained eye might see as natural may well be an area of greatly denuded slopes and upland. If soil continues to be lost, then the economic and environmental consequences are severe. This will help to explain the vast areas of purple Alaskan lupines seen so extensively across Iceland.
